The path goes on

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, February 7, 2010

The road ahead should not frighten us
even if it dark
and single-pathed
and new.
For though it is a road
it runs
in generally gently-curving spirals
with a few sharp turns
through and around and within
the heart of being.
It is a road, a way, a path,
but it is home, too:
We need to let go and learn
to be at home on the road.

It leads where it leads
somewhere in the twisted calendar of our days,
sometimes with fury,
sometimes with gentleness,
with grandeur and with boredom,
always bearing us onward to where
there is work to do
and lessons to learn
and life to celebrate
and sometimes blessed rest:
refreshment for the next stage of the journey.

The journey is both within and without,
individual and universal,
immanent and transcendent
all at the same time.
It goes on in our souls
at the same time we are traveling on the Earth
but the with most unexpected, ever-shifting boundaries:
for one can be all alone in the world
though deep in the company of others,
and though we seem alone, our souls can be crowded
with the freely-roving spirits of
blessed fellow pilgrims of both past and future.
