Clinging to the Spirit

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, March 2, 2008

There are things worth clinging to, after all:
the essence of our history;
the beating hearts of our ancestors,
gone now, but not forgotten.
The glint in our eyes reminds us
that they are still here, within us.

Is it possible to capture the glint
without the angry stare?
The fire without the rage?
Can we know their victories
without reliving their defeats as well?

We shall not be moved
from the glories of their stories,
but let us move beyond
the lethargy of their burdens.

If we let go of everything,
then nothing abides,
and we will no longer have
our own way of walking
in this world.

But let us take our own steps now,
according to our own stride;
neither knavishly forgetting the treasures
of the past, nor foolishly trying
to live over a day already done and gone.
