The ancient song within

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, October 28, 2007

The song of the centuries sings within our souls,
an ancient song, ancient hunger, ancient knowing;
wars and mayhem, prophecy and truth,
meet and merge in us, in you, in me, in everyone:
we are the faith and folly of the ages
writ large or small, depending on what we make of it.

The waters of all rivers flow within our veins,
mighty rivers and brackish streams,
haunted nightmares and golden dreams,
each with their residue upon our minds,
on yours and mine, on everyone’s,
waiting to awaken, and face or dread the day.

One world, one history, one hope, one dream,
while the fears of all centuries coalesce around the stream
damming yet where the rivers still should flow,
damning still where untrammeled hopes would go.
We wait for a savior to rescue us from this mire,
when the spark in our eyes alone can kindle holy fire.

We are the Earth, its contemplative part,
makers of meaning upon this corporal sphere;
we are the ones who must transform this space,
if love is to happen, it must be right here.
We are the ones who must move beyond our small space
to greet the day and its infinite tides of grace.
