The little sacrifices we make
are doorways
into the open universe of perception
we seek.
By giving up some small
and petty part
of ourselves, we widen our arc
magnificently.
So often in life, we know that
by losing, we gain.
in defeat, we reign.
Responsibility is the greater call
of Freedom, without which
freedom falls to license and self-love,
and we’ll never know
the reason we’re living these lives of ours.
We are saved by those things
we cannot have:
the closed door, the gate
locked against us as we approach;
the limitless, wild passions
that well might kill us
left unchecked.
And if that loss creates a hole inside of us,
and life in its wake seems drear at times,
and so very mundane,
there is, at last, a space for God to grow;
there is born an emptiness
which that deeper Spirit now can fill.
When we know, at last, that the pain of sacrifice
is not to be fled, but embraced,
and then in due time released,
then we will glimpse at last the morning hour
of the eternal easter of life made new;
and catch at last our genuine calling
of a deeper, truer bliss than our little, self-atuned ears
could ever hope to hear.
