A Palm Sunday Meditation

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, April 1, 2007

May God’s peace descend on you, like the night,
shimmering, shining, silently pure;
May God’s peace descend upon our hearts,
upon this Earth, so mired in war.

The human world can never give us peace;
it is too shifting, shiftless, jealous, and vain;
changeable, changing, going to and fro’,
always moving, always on the go.

God’s peace is the stillness that contains
all movement; the changelessness that encompasses
all change; so there is here no bitter struggle,
no mad scramble to determine who is on top.

God lifts a finger and the holy bird ascends;
one breath of the divine and all beauty awakens:
all music, all sound, all mighty words flow
through faltering human voices, and our fragile hands.

Seek your peace, then, in the heart of God:
not in shifting like a restless sea
from love to love and cause to cause;
not in the admiration and hosannas of the crowd
which can be stilled and silenced as quickly as they came.

Look to the peace of the holy night
to usher you forth to the blessed day;
Look to the hope on the horizon’s edge
to bring you to that new land of which we all still dream.
