Sing out with confidence and joy
this Word that God has given to you!
Sing out with deep voice and true
the living song of freedom which is yours.
The people stumble, and voices of anger and fear
hold sway, darkening the winter sun of our day,
drawing the unknowing to the same old ways
of tiredness and despair—Sing out!
Sing out, and let them know a still more
glorious day—lighten the burden of their days
with the lilting song of laughter; guide their
eyes to see the new being that rests inside them,
waiting to be born in all of us—Sing out!
The ship of humanity turns but slowly,
through years and centuries of pain and discord,
strife and horror—but then, at last, as though
awakening at the end of a fitful sleep, we arise—
arise and face the new day God and history
has made for all of us.—Sing out!
This may be that day; here, in this most
usual of places. Could it be at last
that here and now history will lurch forward?
May ours be the voices
(with hosts of others) that calls it forth;
may our songs be the blessed melodies
to which the feet of our brothers and sisters
will finally march.
Sing out your hope for this world, our home.
Sing out your dream for what might be.
Sing—then act—this day
to bring forth those possibilities
still deep inside of you:
those songs waiting to be sung;
those dreams, waiting patiently to be born.
