It is in the emptiness inside
that God has the most room to grow.
It is from our deepest hunger
that we may be fed the greatest feast.
It is there, knowing what we don’t know,
that Holy Wisdom can pitch
her widest, all-encompassing tent.
When the ego stops talking,
the soul begins to soar.
When human hands close a window,
the Spirit opens a door.
It is when all has been taken
that we truly learn to give--
and in letting go of life
that we truly start to live.
So as we each grow older,
and watch as the vast train of years
trails longer and longer, steadily behind us,
we come to know firsthand the truth
of all that Life has offered us.
We learn to accept these gifts of life
gracefully, but never too eagerly;
with a hand that holds
but never grasps or clings.
For we know, even in our hearts,
that all this, too, shall fade and pass away
in the timeless, deathless glow
of Eternity’s new-born day.
