A Christmas Eve Prayer

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, December 24, 2006

We have come here again, seeking Christmas,
searching outside of ourselves for that which can only be found within.
We know that we will not find Christmas here
unless we have brought it with us.

Christmas is
    a season of the spirit,
    a habit of the heart,
not only reserved for a designated time and season,
but available to us all days, all years,
lighting our way through the darkness of our souls,
ever toward the shining Bethlehems that dwell within each of us.

Christmas is our time
to listen to our angel voices telling us to let go of our fear
and to bring to birth the possibilities of new life within us.

Then a star can shine for us,
and shine for our world,
in spite of our own prejudices,
in spite of the tyranny of old hatreds and enmity
that refuse to let go gracefully.

A star can shine,
reminding us
of the abiding, persistent powers
of love and freedom
deep within our souls, and in the hearts of all men and women.

As we pause here quietly on this winter night in this season of hope, let us listen quietly to these whispers of Christmas truth,
reminding us of the divine gift of freedom which can never be suppressed forever;
reminding us of the gift of love that can not be bought or sold,
but which can only be freely given and gladly received, and shared, with all our brothers and sisters everywhere.

Amen.
