A Prayer for Advent

Slow us down, God,
that we might discern the deeper meaning of our days.

Stop us from having to hurry through everything,
so that we might, at last, feel your living spirit
guiding us steadily toward that which is right and true,
beautiful and life-sustaining.

Help to clear our minds of the incessant demands
of more... more... faster... faster,
so that in the end we fall down in exhaustion
and settle for so much less than could be.

Help us to clear our minds
so that your enlightenment might shine through them;
so that you may burn within our consciousness
a path of connection
with our bodies and the Earth and with one another.

Help us to find those times of quiet repose we need
to counterbalance and redeem the hours
of worthwhile and necessary activity.

Help us to find balance:
between outer and inner,
between body and mind,
between freedom and duty,
between doing and being.

Slow us down, God,
that we might see your hand at work
in the unfolding of our lives.

Amen.
