Atop the holy mountain

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, October 29, 2006

It was supposed to be lonely at the top,
no one else around, only me,
sitting alone at the top of that secluded pinnacle.
But when I got there after this long and arduous trek,
I found not some narrow, painful, desolate peak
but an wide plateau, awesome and level and expansive,
and crowded with scores and hundreds,
maybe thousands, of other living souls,
had been journeying with me all the while.

There’s plenty of room at the top of the holy mountain
for you, and I, and everyone who yearns to find a place there
(and someday, we hope and pray, that may be all of us).
Even now, in these hours before dawn
there are plenty of blessed souls to keep us company
in this most amazing place.

And from that magnificent perspective,
we can all look out at the vast expanse below and all around:
the breathtaking vistas of a world more glorious than words can tell,
of a world that reflects back in every moment
Spirit’s blessings of truth and beauty.

And while all share together this splendid perspective
the top of the sacred peak
(for all have earned their places by their climbing)
each one knows that the particular view ones sees
is specific, one-of-a-kind, never- to-be-repeated,
unique in all the world;
but this doesn’t make the views of other any less glorious.

So, we strive to make it to the top of the mountain,
each climbing carefully by our own pathway,
not to be alone, but to join with others;
knowing that when we get there at last
the important thing is not merely to savor
our one particular perspective on the glory
but to feel the warmth, sense the breathing,
and hear the rapturous gasping of all of those
with whom we share this planetary garden.
