We Are One

We are linked in a certain mystic oneness—
one Body, one people, one Earth—
and it is in that indivisible oneness
that our salvation lies.
Better to do a deed for justice,
or for mercy,
than to enter into Paradise alone.
For in that deed
lies the kernel of Paradise;
and in that seed
is encoded all there is of glory.

Earth, wind, fire, water, air--
all are chock full of sacred messages;
they are the elements earthly
which point us toward the divine.
Our task, as those who seek to do God’s will,
is to sanctify this holy, fallen Earth
(this planet which gave us birth)
by bringing the Spirit of God (the Spirit of Love)
to every moment of existence.

There is no escape
back into solitary existence;
no surrender solely to those
like us, or those we like:
Blessed only is the one
who is joined to all the living;
and only in communion with all life—
all teeming, maddening, frustrating,
soul-wrenching life—
can we ever grow into harmony with the Divine.
