The Smile of God

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, February 26, 2006

The simplest smile upon a human face
is intimation enough for us of God;
all holiness radiates from there.
There would be no smile
were it not for God;
no reason for joy that bursts forth
from the very heart of life;
no reason to celebrate our being here.

Were it not really God there in that face,
that smile would not draw us closer
to its presence, and set these wellsprings
of love flowing once again.

God is in all,
and our purpose in this world
is to find the goodness and divinity
that dwells within everything:
to unlock it if we must; liberate it;
cultivate it; or perhaps just let it be.

We are here to discern the goodness and divinity
that dwells in all that God has made,
and in all that God has made each one of us to be.
When we serve the God within,
we glorify that Mighty One
who lives and reigns beyond our wildest thinking.

This is our choice:
to live in eternity, or to cling to the moment
that is already dead and gone;
to dwell in the presence of the Divine,
or spend our lives dying surely
just a little bit each day.
