Faith Opens Our Eyes

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, December 11, 2005

Faith opens our eyes to the angels,
those divine messengers that flap and fly
all around us, bringing us glad tidings
of all we could ever yearn for,
of everything for which we hunger.

With our eyes shut, our hearts closed,
we don’t see them;
this world seems dark and drear--
a trial at best; living hell at worst--
always full of the most severe chastisements.

But faith opens those eyes of ours,
and sets these hearts to beating once again;
it is faith which whispers in our ears
that life can be worth living.

Faith unseals the living envelope
and lets all of God’s miracles
cascade out; filling our senses,
and bringing with them
the most amazing chances for wonder and surprise.

It has been said that
“Faith lights the lamp,
which is kept burning
only through the oil of love.”

Faith lights within us a holy fire,
which reaches consummation
only in our love for this Earth
and all its blessed creatures.

Faith lights life’s lamp.
Love keeps it burning.
