One Prayer from the Heart

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, November 27, 2005

It is better to pray one prayer from the heart
than to mutter a psalter full of pious banalities.

It is better to have one task, and do it well,
than to spend your days endlessly engaged
in a mountain of useless activity.

To gorge oneself on empty calories
is not to feast at the banquet of life;
better to eat a simple, winter’s supper
of bread and cheese, and know
this food is of the Earth.

God reads our hearts
and not our resumes;
and we meet God
in simple listening and helping,
not in cramming our lives so full
that we cram out God instead.

God reads our hearts,
but if the noise of our lives
is up too loud, we’ll never hear
God’s blessed narration.

And we’ll be forced to write the script ourselves--
cramming in too much action; too many scenes;
maybe even a fake laugh track: a mere situation comedy
where a truly Divine one should be.
