A dish for the gods

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, November 13, 2005

We are, none of us, fount of all knowledge and truth;
but we are bubbling cauldrons where we all can
be brought to simmer together,
ushering forth a whole new creation.

So, it’s important then
what, exactly, we toss into the cauldron here.
If we make a soup choosing only
the most debased and inferior ingredients
don’t be surprised if our world ends up
with a universal belly ache.

We can choose those influences
which will compound within us:
the thoughts, ideas, points of view;
books, music, films, yes—even foods
and fragrances and flowers;
all these become what we will become.

May we find the inner strength
(and outer grace)
to choose more wisely, all of us;
to make our lives, if not in every moment
a prayer or a symphony, at least
a good and wholesome dish
in which the gods may yet delight.
