The sacrifices of love

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, September 25, 2005

The small sacrifices we make for love
can become the choicest bouquets of human living.

A deed that is done for compassion’s sake
can equal a million done in the name of self alone,
where simple buying and selling command the day.

But love’s burdens can be heavy, too
(and not always pleasant);
at times, love moves only in the presence of pain.

But it is not pain that persists
for its own sake alone
(or in defense of the small and isolated self),
but holy and wholesome pain,
that is joined to all life,
and finds its way though
to meaning and growth.

So where love abides,
there will be joy enough
to lift our hearts,
and make our burdens light
and our sacrifices blessed.

In the simple sacrifice of service,
the glory and abundance of God
arises most gloriously;
in the simple sharing of souls with soul,
we glimpse most lucidly
the face of the Divine.

And often, it is not through saints’ hands,
but through ours, that the Spirit moves,
and that the Kingdom of God will be spread
at last across the land.
