For Dedication Sunday

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, April 17, 2005

We are linked in a certain mystic oneness—
one Body, one People, one Church, one Earth—
and it is in that indivisible oneness, that universal unity,
that our salvation lies.
Better to do a deed for justice or for mercy,
than to enter into Paradise alone:
For in that deed
lies the kernel of Paradise;
and in that seed
is encoded all there is of glory.

Earth, wind, fire, water, air--
all are chock full of God’s messages;
they are the elements earthly
which point us toward the divine.
Every person, too, we meet along the way
is a messenger of the meaning of our lives.

Our task, as those who seek to do God’s will,
is to sanctify this holy, troubled Earth
(this holy planet which gave us birth)
by bringing the Spirit of God (the Spirit of Love)
to every moment of our existence.

Once we have tasted the fruit
of our connection with each other,
there can be no escape again
back into solitary existence.
There can be no surrender
solely to those like us,
or only those we like;
once the die is cast,
the quilt of life yearns to be completed,
and the circle of life to be made full.

Blessed, truly, is the one
who is joined to all the living;
and only in communion with all life—
all teeming, maddening, frustrating,
inspiring, soul-shaking Life—
can we ever grow at last
into harmony with our God.

Blessed we are when we are joined as one
in the Great Garment of Life.

Amen.
