We will not be guided where we dare not go

We will not be guided where we dare not go,
in spite of well-meaning madonnas;
fitful visions of the end; shimmering, lovely waters:
unless the voice inside tells us,
and bids us go, and then we will follow.

Our experience, our epic, is our own,
and so it is that the golden tales of others,
even if full of action, and finely detailed
can leave us cold and wondering,
thinking we have lost some deeper meaning.

But that meaning, for each of us, is here:
look inside yourselves; stay closer to home;
stray no longer in other folks’ pastures;
worship no longer other men’s gods;
look inside, and know your truth is there.

And then you will be blest, and know your reason.
Then you will know how to bless each other;
then you will know, at last, in the proper season,
the calling that is yours to answer,
and feel again life’s breeze upon your face.
