Temples of the Spirit

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, December 26, 2004

Have you pondered what it means
to be a temple,
a temple of the Holy Spirit, a temple of God?

This Temple must be cared for,
well lighted and well maintained;
it wants for nothing,
and all who look upon it will know
that God’s love flows here.

It is no grim and austere place,
but a home of abundance and joy!
It shines forth in the simplicity God’s radiant face,
and upon all its blessings it bestows.

An accessible Temple—yes!—
founded on deepest humility,
with plenty of room for all souls
of goodwill and peace;
plenty of room for all of those
who join in the journey for justice.

But there are doors that must be closed
from time to time,
if the Temple is to prosper:
doors of selfishness, and mere convenience,
doors toward everything that would cut us off
from the love and truth
of our Divine Benefactor.

Our Father’s mansion’s many rooms;
and we are each one of them.
Decorate yourself well, then,
with the blessings life has given you,
and with the gentle ministrations of your faith.
Then swing wide the doors
and let the winds of the Spirit blow within,
and freshen the air, and make yourself new,
and bring borne upon them
blessings gentle, and holy, and wise.
