The impedimentia that clutter about our souls
canm hide the light
smother it
like too many condominiums
blocking from the view of too many eyes
the view of the mighty bay’s vista.
As we clear, item by item,
the impediments of our households,
so we can clear perhaps,
relationship by relationship and freedom by freedom,
the inner blockages that keep us bound
and small.
But we don’t do this
so that we can merely turn
and accumulate more items to store
for the next rainy day.
We don’t liberate ourselves from bondage
to give ourselves back over to the same oppressor
(or one with slightly more exotic credentials).
We are living fires, sacred flames
only if we remember deeply
to forget our little selves
(which, paradoxically, are the only selves we have
most times)
and turn and glorify the Creator
by serving His/Her Creation
and helping to light
(as acolytes of the Holy One)
the living candles of our brothers and sisters all around us.
