For United Nations Sunday

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, October 24, 2004

Why not call upon our God of love
as a comrade and friend,
in this great battle with those small and petty men
who lead you now?
Why not ask the Spirit’s help
against those who would rob the public trust and treasury,
make war where love should go,
and bring into disdain the good name of this nation’
we love so dearly?
Oh, they will marshal their gods, too—
gods small and vindictive as they are;
but conniving, too, so be careful!
They will sound again the clarion call of fear;
they will summon forth the wastes of greed;
they will build a city founded upon hate—
and many will be deceived, and will follow them:
for hatred seems to glitter so fair,
and provide an illusion of power.

But even these knaves and fools, these little men,
(as even Baghdad’s tyrant before them) cannot resist
the Power of Love, growing forth from out
of everyday human souls like ours.
May our love become a mighty mass— a loving fortress—
a swelling cascade of little men and women
who know the truth of peace and the wisdom of justice,
and will not be swayed from this great and gentle crusade.
It may be a long struggle, ending only in the midnight hours
of this old world (the little men’s gold may yet buy them
a few more years). But if we cast our struggle in the eyes
of time—along the wider horizon of Being—
and if we turn command over to the God within:
then hope will abide, and truth will conquer,
and a new world will be born, sooner or later.

Amen.
