A Thanksgiving Meditation

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, November 23, 2003

A holy hymn of love rises within us,
and colors rise, and come to guild the sky
which is our heart;
when we rejoice at the miracle of being alive,
and greet the other flowers with whom
we share this blessed road.

Why should we covet anything we don’t have?
We have the Spirit’s gifts; they dwell inside of us,
and we dwell among them. Even more:
we have been given eyes to see them,
and hearts to apprehend, and a wondrous,
potent mind—a consciousness—to know
that they are ours?

Why, then, do we go on pining and sighing,
constantly showing off the empty pockets of our beings,
living in a state of base scarcity,
when all about us abundance luxuriates
and the roads we walk each day are, in truth,
lined with over-filled market stalls
of love and peace and plenty—
all free, all ours for the taking?

If we stay locked inside ourselves
(or clinging to our small and petty plans),
our spirits wither; we die
(though to earthbound eyes
we might seem healthy enough).
But by giving it all away,
opening wide the channels of our souls,
and singing that resounding song of Life,
the universe burgeons forth
with the Spirit’s holy gifts.

In giving all our gifts away, we hold them closer
to our hearts than we can imagine;
we make them truly, deeply ours,
until they flourish forth wondrously, recklessly;
and the Spirit’s blessing becomes our own,
and we bless our friends and fellow pilgrims
with whom we share this Earth.

Amen.
