Things Worth Clinging To

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, October 26, 2003

“I have a certain way of being in this world,
and I shall not, I shall not be moved.”
(Maya Angelou)

The leaves fall from the trees,
and the lesson the fall teaches us
is our need to let go.

But there are things worth clinging to, after all:
the essence of our history, for one;
the beating hearts of our ancestors,
gone now, but not forgotten.
The glint in the eyes of our children
which reminds us that those who came before
are still here, within us.

Is it possible to capture the glint
without the angry stare?
To taste the fire without the rage?
And can we know their victories
without reliving their defeats as well?

We shall not be moved
from the glories of their stories;
but let us move beyond
the lethargy of their burdens.

If we let go of everything in them
that was true, and good, and just,
then nothing will abide any longer,
and we will no longer have
our own way of walking
in this world.
