Who Can Do Anything But Dance?

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, March 16, 2003

In the presence of the holy
(which is where we live each day, you know)—
blessed by God,
surrounded by grace—
who can do anything else but dance?

But so often we forget to dance
and we march, or stumble,
through life instead
(and that is our greatest tragedy).

Why is it so hard to knock on the door of life?
Why is it so hard to dive into this heavenly ocean
and swim with the tides of the divine?
Why does it seem (to us) somehow simpler
to try to manage each moment, catalogue each pain,
as though God were out of the picture,
and we, the great artists, captains of destiny’s ship?

Open my heart to your joy this day, O Lord!
As I awake each morn, then awaken within me anew
the profound sense of the aura of your golden dawn.
Let my hours and minutes be but tiny reflections
of the glory of your eternity; let my days be creations
of love and justice. Let your great cosmic smile
enlighten its way into the chamber of my heart,
and the music of holy laughter rock and roll its way
through the vibrant stanzas of my life.
May your love flow in my blood, embolden my will,
and vivify my mind with knowledge of your presence.
May you plant within me small seeds of hope and courage,
and—who knows?-- maybe even a little bit of wisdom.
Amen.
