There are those frightening highways
That veer off from the main ways
onto monstrous by-ways
or mere diversionary paths;
that capture our soul’s spirit,
or just fritter away our time
until we’re dead and gone,
and the only pathway left
leads to the grave, or worse.
But if we remain true and loyal
to the pathway our heart proposes
then there is no power of Heaven or Earth
that can stop us on our way;
if we stay faithful all our days
and love the daring work of justice,
and the peace that gentleness brings,
then the very stars of history
will smile at us in amazement.
There is one pathway that shines
true to the center of all beings,
in spite of the blessed illusion
that there are many paths:
It is the way of the Spirit.
It is a path as short as the inchworm’s journey;
it is a Long March as arduous
as the journey from deepest darkness
back into God’s light once again.
It is a journey we make
every moment of our lives;
it is the journey we take
every season of our being:
a journey so sweet, when at long last we greet
the holy god or goddess who lives within.
