We stand once again at Memorial Day. Let us pause for a moment in our busy lives—pause, and remember that nothing worthwhile is ever without cost, and that life is always lived on the border between joy and tragedy. Let us pause for a moment and memorialize those who gave their lives in the wars of our country, to remember those who did their duty as they saw fit. As we think back upon this sacrifice, different feelings may mingle within us: sadness at the tragedy of too many lives cut too short; anger at lives spent in senseless and meaningless combat; pride in the face of heroism, and pride at the thought of lives given for truly noble cause. May the Spirit of Truth abide with us, and the Spirit of Peace dwell among us as we assemble this hour to remember these brave souls. May a Spirit of Holiness and Wholeness unite with our own human spirits, and empower us to go forward, bravely and resolutely, to build a new world where such sacrifice will no longer be required—to build a world of peace and freedom, a world in harmony with all spirits human and divine. Amen. jbs |
