A Prayer for Pentecost

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, May 19, 2002

Speak through us, O Lord,
that others may listen,
and the face of the world be changed.

Center us in your love, O God,
that our work might be for justice.

Lift these heavy burdens from off these tired shoulders,
that we may rise and dance, dance again to a song of life.
May the angels come, O Lord, down from the sky,
or wherever it is they abide, and take away this heavy weight,
flying heavenward with it, to where all is reconciled
in the logic of God’s great equation.

Fill us with your life-giving breath, that we may feel
its fire deep inside our chests, its warmth in our whole beings;
strengthen our faith that we might abide in your presence, to do your work,
even when that work is hard, and lonely, and long.

Fill our voices with your heavenly song, sometimes concealed
within the creeks and moans of this drear and surly earthly tune
we sing all too often.

Let your beauty shine forth, even within these all-too-seldom
smiles that grace the heavenly image we glimpse
in our own deep human faces.

Let your holy fire peer from these eyes of ours,
that we might enlighten the darkness of these times,
and glimpse the birth of your new creation,
right here, right now, among us every moment.

Amen.
