That There Is So Much Good Within Us

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, May 5, 2002

The entire world is inside of me,
so who should judge?
I am all that was, will be--
All goodness and evil dance,
embrace, kiss deep inside of me--
So why fear the coming of the deep, dark night,
or even the approach of the newest, boldest dawn?

I weep for the evil I have done
in another’s name.
My heart swells with compassion
when I consider the mercy
that these frail human hands can work
to help another.
The Spirit moves in all, transforming all,
and deep in our souls all gods and goddesses dwell:
patiently awaiting their moment’s time
of embodiment upon the Earth,
patiently awaiting their time to rise to birth
in the heart and mind of these most simple beings.

There are so many circumstances
that hide the light of the eternal
before which we stand:
the anger to which we cling,
if only because it’s not the boredom
which threatens to kill us all the other days
we are locked in its numbing embrace;
the hallow absence of that
which we really would be;
the deadening hum of routine,
not strong enough to annihilate all spirit,
but which can still lull us to sleep
even in the presence of the eternal.

But that there is so much good within us at all—
that we are awake at all,
from moment to moment,
one hour in ten perhaps,
is reason enough
to rejoice for an instant, and go on
living, searching, and always loving.
That we simple men and women,
these unadorned hearts and souls we are,
could even apprehend (and reflect) from time to time
the shining eyes of the Spirit is enough
to set this heart to beating;
this voice to singing;
to guide this most ordinary of lives
to living boldly at last in the presence of God.
