God Is At Home

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, March 24, 2002

We rant and rave there is no God,
no justice, no peace, that we are trapped,
locked in an earthly prison all our own,
no greater heaven, no greater home.

When on the other side of lightened air,
there stands a blessed kingdom all our own,
if we just open up our hearts and hands in love:
Just knock and it shall be given, he intoned.

But we too indolent to knock
complain that God is dead.

If we could truly pray without ceasing,
or pray, at least, for goodly hours of our days,
we would be transported to God’s presence,
our souls to free, our spirits to amaze.

But we, too distracted to say a simple prayer,
cry bitter tears and moan God isn’t there.

We are the Earth, its contemplative part,
makers of meaning upon this corporeal sphere;
we are the ones who must transform this space;
if love is to happen, it must be right here.

That means moving beyond our little space,
greeting the day, and its infinite tides of grace.
