People of Our Own Times

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, January 20, 2002

I would be a man of my times,
walking across the road of history:
comforting some; confounding others;
lifting burdens of the wretched;
spitting in the eye of all who cross my comrades.

I would be a man of this day,
living mightily with all the age presents;
laughing heartily in the presence of absurdity;
hopefully commanding the hearts and minds
of all good people, those who also long for change.

What if I am only a third mate, and not an admiral,
playing but a walk-on role in this great battle?
I, for a time, have felt the hope of history
flowing through me; I have glimpsed the future
and know that it lives within me.

It is a love song to life we sing, my friends and I--
a hope-filled tune, with verses fixed on possibility.
If we are not too timid, and if our voices hold out
long enough to sing it, it shall shake the very canyons of despair
and call forth ever awesome flowerings of change.
