What a banquet this Christmas is;
a great, grand, glorious feast of living souls
with whom we share this world!
What a festival this Christmas is;
an awesome living celebration
of color, fragrance, music,
earth, wind, fire, water,
all ushered into being
by the very Word of God;
all created, completely and thoroughly,
by the very Hand of God.
There is deep within these old souls of ours
a molten core,
a beautiful garden,
a Christ child waiting to be born.
Dancing on this earth
with that delicate Christmas Child
who is our heart,
we partake of a sacrament of life
so sweet sometimes that it hurts.
The face of the Holy Child smiles back at us,
and we are bathed in a glow of love
so bright we are blinded;
hurled back at last into the holy darkness
from which all new births come.
This Christmas may we be born anew
to the child within us, the children among us,
and a hope so fierce and free
it will last through all the year.
May Christmas live again within ours hearts,
so that we might learn at last to live among one another
with faith, with love, with compassion and grace,
ever sharing the glorious feast God’s hand has made for us.
