Why Look Further For Mystery Than This?

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, December 16, 2001

Mystery oozes forth
from every sinew and vein,
every muscle and cell,
that we are, each of us.
Why look further for mystery than this?
Why search so far away
in endless skies celestial,
in dark, deep, dungeon pit,
when the most amazing miracle of all--
you, I, all of us-- is right here:
ours now for the taking and apprehending.
Such a marvelous secret!
Such an amazing grace!

We walk through life as though we
know ourselves so well.
But all the time we wonder:
who is this stranger I journey with--
this damnable stranger,
this sublime intruder,
this one who would separate
my very self from all the illusions and
easy delusions to which I cling for life?

He speaks a language that I don’t;
sings different songs; dreams of things
unimaginable to me who has no imagination.
Yet I know him, deep down inside,
as the very same self I would truly be.

So, sometimes we laugh, and sometimes we argue,
and sometimes we ignore each other;
but usually we go through our days
with my casting suspicious glances in his direction,
and his smiling back to remind me
that things are seldom as simple
as we think they are.
