All That We Need

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, October 7,  2001

God gives us what we need
in all abundance
at each stage of our lives
to live in it fully,
grow in it courageously,
and learn from it hopefully.

There is everything we need
right here, right now,
a veritable feast of love
and always
most gracious surprises
to remind us that life is wonder.

Live fully then in this moment,
embrace like a long lost friend
this stage of life where you stand now:
neither pine and sigh
for all that once was;
nor hurry yourself to death
with advanced reservations for the grave.

And what if the body expands,
sight grows dim and sounds grow fainter:
there is inside an ever-present youngster:
no more to walk this earth in body perhaps,
but there nonetheless,
gazing on this ever-evolving world
with that same strange mixture
of wonder tinged by longing,
but now, in these latter years,
kissed gently by the lips of wisdom,
empowered by a vision of hope,
forever young, forever bold,
with a heart that beats for freedom.
