As we face a new year...
To let go of the small
in order to embrace the large;
to let loose the petty, unimportant matters,
in order to embrace the divine;
to give up our little hatreds, enmities, and spites
in order to lose ourselves
in the great work and play that is ours to do:
this is to know happiness;
this is to taste bliss;
this is to be the truly human one
that great God in heaven wants us each to be.
To let go the ties that bind us
to bitterness, jealousy, and
the deep inner rage that destroys everything;
to let go the old, familiar ways
that so often curve into a noose binding us,
however comfortably, in the mire of our limits;
to let go of the cold and barren past
and let heavenly fires warm our hearts
and illuminate our way:
this is to live our lives in such a way
that they bless the world in which we live,
and bless us back with most profound
gifts of the spirit, gifts of grace, gifts of joy,
great gifts of peace for all the world to share.
