Body and Spirit

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, February 27, 2000

We have to know the great universal Love first
before it can flow through us.
We have to come face to face with the beautiful things,
the dappled things and mild,
which keep the fire warm inside the heart.
We have to listen with open ears to the musical things,
the stirring chords and gentle,
which make wide the path where the Spirit will flow.
We have to engage with open minds the inspiring things,
the uplifting thoughts and profound words,
which deepen and strengthen our connection with Truth.

And doing these big, important things
means doing those smaller, daily things
which open the heart and ears and mind
and set the Love-catching soul in motion.
That means paying attention to this body of ours,
and these bodies around us,
which are, after all, the vessels to the soul--
even when it might seem easier
just to disengage and run
and jet around through the cosmos
as a glow-enveloped soul,
all air and light and spirit.
But we're not.

So Mary now meets Martha
and bliss can befriend duty.
And in the holy union of the two
that whom we can be shall be born:
and through that being earthly and spiritual
the Love can flow and spread
and be shared by all the world the bodied one touches
each day of our living upon this Earth.
