Listen!
Someone is trying to tell you something:
If we fill our lives with noise and more noise,
even of the most classical and beautiful kind,
we won't be able to hear the snowflakes
as they crash to the ground and giggle
or weep.
God is heard most distinctly in the silence:
soft as the summer wind
loud as a thunder storm
and just as sweet and just as brutal.
There is no emptiness there
but fulness enough to keep us enthralled
for a hundred thousand lifetimes.
Listen
and find a way.
Listen
and know the direction.
But the only way to listen
is to stop speaking
and to stop hearing
the input, distractions, grand choral amens
that the Voice of God shushes away
if only for an instant of grace.
