Free Market of Ideas

The Free Market of Ideas of the First Parish Universalist Church of Stoughton offers a wide variety of programs of enrichment, education, and enlightenment on an extensive array of spiritual, cultural, and social issues.

Through our Free Market of Ideas, we at First Parish seek to reach out to our communities and raise the level of public discourse on matters of common concern, as well as to introduce to the general public ideas and concepts that might not be readily available elsewhere.

Programs of the Free Market of Ideas are held at the church on a regular basis, and are always free of charge. You are always most welcome to attend any of these events that might be of interest to you! Watch this space for upcoming programs, or if you would like to be on our Free Market of Ideas mailing list, please contact us.

Chris Loughlin
“A Sense of Place”
Chris Loughlin lives and works at Crystal Spring, a learning center where people of good will are welcome to search for ways to live in harmony with the natural world and with each other. She coordinates programs exploring the “new cosmology” while working with Religious Orders to preserve their lands.
In the act of acknowledging the connection and dependency we have with the web of life lies the possibility of a deep and abiding communion. As author Wendell Berry has written, “You can’t know who you are until you know where you are.” The process of discovering and achieving a sense of place is surely one of the most important steps in coming home to place.  An evening to reflect upon where that we may rediscover who.
Please come and welcome Chris Loughlin to First Parish. Chris will be speaking about our sense of place, what that means and why it important to look at a positive harmony between humans and the environment. We are a part of nature not separate from it. When we feel that relationship we are more apt to want to be proactive and then will support our local farmers, businesses that are environmentally friendly and support sustainable practices. All are welcome.

 “The Way”
a  film starring Martin Sheen,
directed by Emilio Estevez

A truly moving and deeply spiritual film, The Way chronicles one man’s journey on the the Camino de Santiago, the famous Spanish pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, also known as the Way of St. James. Beautifully filmed and wonderfully acted, The Way does a masterful job of exploring in a sometimes probing, sometimes lighthearted way, deep questions of faith, spirituality, family, and interpersonal growth and relationships. Watching this film is a wonderful way to begin preparing for the season of Easter. All are welcome.
